Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop- July 2014

"At the Missouri Urban Journalism Workshop, high school students from around the country work together with the guidance of professional journalists to produce stories, photos and broadcasts. MUJW is sponsored by the Dow Jones News Fund and takes place at the University of Missouri — Columbia, one of the most premier journalism schools in the world."

After attending MUJW in July of 2014, I came home with more advanced journalism skills and the ability to investigate a story until the break of dawn. Under journalist Stephanie Green, I spent my eight days calling sources, speaking to various government agencies, writing and talking to local residents. For my first story, I investigated David Brune, an esteemed professor at the university, about his widely known waste-free aquaculture facility, the first of its kind in the world. Then I dug into Missouri's few and proud fish farmers and their struggle to stay in business against international fish farmers and how government regulations tie into fish prices in Missouri and internationally. Both of my articles are published on the MUJW website, both of which are linked below.
